15 Recommendations for starting a blog

So you’re thinking about starting a blog, but you don’t have any idea where to start, right? Neither did I. I was clueless. You are in the right place to learn something from my experience.

One of the misconceptions about starting a blog is that you need to be a great writer to be successful. People read blog sites to get a personal perspective on things, so most bloggers write in a very informal and conversational style.

I will write down some things that you should know before starting your first blogs. That way, you don’t have to make these mistakes yourself!

These are the recommendations I can give:

  1. Find Your Niche. When learning how to be a blogger, it’s important to know what you’re passionate about. Traveling? Cooking? Being a parent? If you have found your passion whatever it is, write about that. If not, then you must first find it.
  2. Define Your Audience. Once you’ve found your niche, you need to know who will be reading your blog. This has been difficult for me at the beginning. That’s why I start it as travel & lifestyle blog.
  3. Be Yourself. Part of being interesting is telling your story. Every person is unique, and your story is an important one. Don’t be afraid to tell it.
  4. Add Value. Your blog must add value to its readers’ lives. This is the only way you will get quality readers to your site, and keep them coming back.
  5. Be Original. Yes, there are other blogs out there about the same thing you want to write about. You are what makes your blog different. It’s about your perspective, your creativity, the value that you add.
  6. Be Interesting. Especially if you want people to share it with others. You will find your style of writing with time, the experience will teach you what works and what doesn’t. Again is best to be yourself.
  7. Time. After starting a blog you’ll learn that blogging takes a lot of time. I used to spend hours on the blog and Instagram, deciding what was the right thing to do, trying out so many different themes. Once you have your design set up, don’t modify it too much. Instead, spend time on your writing.
  8. Vision. It’s hard to create a beautiful blog if you don’t know how you want it to look like. It’s not a good idea to compare yourself to other bloggers, but sometimes other blogs can inspire you and give you new ideas.
  9. Popularity. Don’t expect to become a popular blogger overnight and earn millions from the blog. Maybe you never will. However, with a quality content, patience, and persistence, everything is possible.
  10. When to Post. I thought that I should have certain days to publish a blog post. With time I realized that it doesn’t really matter. I don’t adhere to a particular schedule. It is important to write consistently, that’s a problem that I have in the season because of my other job. However, it is important to mind the time of the day that you publish a post.
  11. Research. Spend time researching what you’re writing about. The content will be more authentic and relevant if you put some link connected with the topic you are writing about.
  12. Picture. Put a picture of yourself on your blog. People identify with other people. Avoid using selfies, they make you look unprofessional.
  13. Social Media. I recommend using Instagram, Facebook, and Tweeter to help connect with your audience and other bloggers, but don’t get too caught up in it. Focus on the writing first, social media thereafter.
  14. Engage with other bloggers. This is a good way to start growing your blog and traffic. By reading other bloggers’o8pk posts, commenting, liking, reblogging, you will receive all your effort in return. A good way to do it is by using Facebook groups.
  15. Live Your Life. Try not to find yourself blogging about your life instead of living it.

I hope this was helpful to the new bloggers who stumbled upon it. And to those who are already blogging, hope it was a reminder there is always something new that you can learn. I’m still learning too. If there is anything that more experienced bloggers would like to add feel free and do so. I’m available for question. Thank you for reading and happy blogging.

    1. Oh it takes time, it’s different for everyone. Try not to look too much in the statistics. It’s good to engage with other bloggers, like and comment theirs posts. And share the content on social media. That’s very important to get more following and traffic for the beginning.

    1. Mine is travel and lifestyle. I’m writing mainly for my country, Macedonia, and also for other destinations that I’m visiting, sharing my experience. If you take a look at my many beside Travel I also have Lifestyle, I put there everything else. It’s best to start first with writing and you will see what you like more to write about.
